Dial from an On-Campus Phone (Dialing Instructions)

This document will help students, faculty, and staff use telephones on-campus.

On Campus (572, 294, 296)

To call other telephones on campus, enter the last five numbers you wish to call.

  • For numbers beginning with 572, PRESS 2-XXXX.
  • For numbers beginning with 294, PRESS 4-XXXX.
  • For numbers beginning with 296, PRESS 6-XXXX.

Off Campus

  • To call local numbers off campus, PRESS 8 + Local number.
  • For authorization code users: LISTEN for recall dial tone and ENTER authorization code.

Directory Assistance

  • On-Campus Numbers: PRESS 0.
  • Off-Campus Numbers: PRESS 8 + 1 + 411, or 8 + 1 + area code + 555-1212.
  • International Calls (Calling Card required): PRESS 8 + 0.

Calling the Operator

  • Iowa State Campus Operator: PRESS 0.
  • Off-Campus Operator / International Operator: PRESS 8 + 0.

Long Distance Calls

  • Normal Calling: PRESS 8 + 1 + Area Code + Number
  • Using an Authorization Code:
    1. PRESS 8 + 1 + Area Code + Number
    2. LISTEN for recall dial tone
    3. ENTER authorization code.
  • Toll-Free Calls (For any 3-digit toll free number, e.g., 800, 866, 877, 888)

    • PRESS 8 + 1 + 8XX + Number

    Direct Dialing International Calls

    • PRESS 8 + 011 + Country code + City code + Local number.
    • For authorization code users: LISTEN for recall dial tone and ENTER authorization code.

    Using an AT&T Calling Card

    1. PRESS 8 + 0 + area code + seven-digit number
    2. LISTEN for computer tone
    3. ENTER calling card number or wait for operator

    Using a Calling Card from Another Carrier

    • PRESS 8 + 1 + Access number provided by carrier.

    Person-to-Person or Collect Calls

    1. PRESS 8 + 0 + area code + seven-digit number
    2. LISTEN for operator
    3. Give requested information

    Alerting Rings (indicate where a call originated from)

    1. Single ring: call from an on-campus extension
    2. Double ring: call from off-campus or operator
    3. Triple ring: automatic callback call

    Call Progress Tones

    • Call Waiting: A single tone while you are on the line indicates that you have another incoming call.
    • Confirmation: Three short tones confirm the command you entered has been performed.
    • Intercept: Alternating high and low tones indicate a dialing error or denial of the command you entered.
    • Recall: Three short tones followed by dial tone indicate the command you entered has been performed.

    Temporary Data Protection

    When using your telephone with a modem for data calls, activate Temporary Data Protection to prevent any interruption for the duration of your data call.

    • LISTEN for dial tone.
    • PRESS 113.
