FAQ: Why does the VirusScan installer report "Error 1920: Service mcshield (mcshield) failed to start.'"

Keywords: virusscan | mcshield | 1920 | on-access | scanner | error

Some changes need to be made to the options during the installation. You will have to install VirusScan from the downloaded installer or from CD; you will not be able to make these changes with Scout.

1. Start the VirusScan installer.

2. When you get to the window for choosing "Typical" or "Custom", choose "Custom".

3. Click "Next" twice.

4. Turn off "Enable On-Access Scanner at the end of installation".

5. Finish the installation.

6. Do not restart the machine; instead, start the Task Manager by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Delete, select "vstskmgr.exe", and click "End Task".

7. Go to My Computer. Double click on the folder "Network Associates" folder, then the "VirusScan" folder.

8. Right click on the file named "adslokuu.dll" and rename it to "adslokuu.old".

8. Restart.

VShield should now work correctly. There is a patch available from McAfee tech support that will correct this problem (ask for Patch 13).

ADDENDUM: We have found that this error can sometimes be caused when the McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator agent software has been incorrectly uninstalled from the machine. If this is the case, and no other McAfee/Network Associates software has been installed, the problem can be corrected as follows:

1. Uninstall McAfee VirusScan Enterprise using the "Add/Remove Programs" option in the Control Panel.

2. Run regedit.

3. Find and delete the registry keys HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMcAfee and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWARENetwork Associates.

4. Restart the computer.

5. Install McAfee VirusScan Enterprise; it should install normally.
